Root Canal Treatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment also called as "Endodontics" is a sequence of treatment for the pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection and protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion. The infected portion is removed and filled with gutta percha.

Rootcanal treatment is an instant pain reliever and the best treatment to retain the original teeth. A Root canal treated tooth serves its purpose and function just as a healthy tooth.

We have

  1. Single sitting RCT Approach
  2. Multiple Sitting RCT Approach

Single Sitting RCT

If a tooth's pathology is limited to just a portion of its nerve tissue then the single-visit approach makes an excellent treatment choice.

Advancements in technology made it possible to complete a patient's work in a single sitting without compromising treatment quality.

Advantages of single sitting RCT :-

For the patient, the obvious benefit is that all of their treatment is completed in a single sitting.

B) Multiple sitting RCT

In case of tooth with active infections or retreatment cases we go to multiple sitting rct approach

If two appointments are needed:

  1. The first is focused on the task of cleaning and shaping the tooth's root canal system.
  2. The second is used for filling and sealing the tooth.
  3. The two appointments are usually scheduled about a week apart.

Advantages of multiple sitting RCT :-

This type of approach makes managing any flare ups that develop easier and more predictable, and it also gives the dentist an opportunity to monitor the progress of the tooth's healing process.

Care after RCT:

Once a root canal treatment is performed, the recipient must have a crown placed over the tooth to protect it. During the time when antibiotics are being used, care should be taken to avoid using the tooth to chew food. The tooth has been structurally weakened and may break, or there is a possibility of the interior of the tooth becoming reinfected. If the tooth feels sensitive following the procedure, a standard over-the-counter pain medication as guided may be taken. This sensitivity will fade after a few days.
